If all of this makes you feel a little grimy, remember that the modern Olympics exists specifically as a propaganda vehicle (and here I include marketing as a kind of propaganda). The IOC may call it a "movement", evoking images of grass roots participation and noble sporting ideals, but that is propaganda itself, designed to draw a graceful fig leaf over the reality that the Olympics is a vast business venture --reportedly US$4 billion in revenue over its previous quadrennial cycle-- driven by sponsorships and advertising. Sponsors take the messaging opportunity seriously, as well they should considering what they invest. Läs hela

The concept of an authoritarian grand unity that has dominated Chinese civilization for more than 2,000 years has left a deep imprint in the culture of the Han. Two pathologies thus formed among them cultural arrogance, and the mentality of power and interest. These two are the root causes of the disease of ignorant thinking among many Han Chinese. China was one of the most serious victims of Western cultural arrogance. Were it not for the ferocity of Marxism-Leninism would China’s modernization have killed so many people? But a major reason for China becoming a serious victim of Western cultural arrogance, was the Han predilection for power and interest. When stubborn cultural arrogance incurred comprehensive humiliation... Läs mer

There is the tragedy of the bloodshed itself, and then the tragedy of the government's suppression of history. One distinction of a healthy society is how it treats its past. What establishes a regime’s legitimacy? How can it justify its rule without the explicit consent of the people or their political participation? Can an improved standard of living for the people of China alone solve the question of legitimacy for the Communist Party of China? And for how long? 1/6: MXp: CBC-video från 3-4 juni 1989It’s about time for Taiwan to become an "exporter of democracy,” speakers at a conference on the 1989 Tiananmen Massacre said in Taipei yesterday, urging the government to discuss human rights issues during cross-strait negotiations.
"China has become an ‘exporter of authoritarianism — not because of any ideological reasons, but for its own national interests,” said Yiong Cong-ziin, director of the Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) Department of Social Movement.
... "As the Chinese government cracks down on Tibetan demonstrators in Lhasa, arrests Chinese human rights activists and even allows live organ harvest of Falun Gong practitioners, we cannot pretend that all these do not happen and we only focus on economic exchanges,” Yiong said.
“If we do, we would become a member of China’s ‘axis of evil,’” he said.

It said China had claimed that last year's Olympic Games would mark a turning point for the country's human rights situation whereas what actually happened was quite the opposite.
28/5: mwcnews: Forced labour and organ harvestingBy Davis Matas
China is not a country with an independent judiciary and the rule of law. There is no means in China of enforcing the promises in the Constitution. What the Constitution of China says is not a reliable indicator of what is happening in China.
... An extremely large group of people subject to the exercise of the whims and power of the state, without recourse to any form of protection of their rights, provides a potential source for organ harvesting of the unwilling. These detention facilities are not just forced labour camps. They are also potential forced organ donor banks.

Ethan Gutmann is the author of Losing the New China: A Story of American Commerce, Desire and Betrayal and of a forthcoming book on the Chinese state and Falun Gong. This article is the text of a talk given on April 15 at the International Conference on Religious Freedom in China, hosted by Edward McMillan-Scott, Vice President of the European Parliament, in the European Parliament, Brussels.
Saturday marks the 10th anniversary of a protest by an estimated 10,000 practitioners who stood silently around the Communist Party leadership compound in Beijing, alerting the government to the group's strength and wide appeal. International human rights groups, the United Nations and numerous Western governments have particularly criticized China for using reeducation through labor to punish practitioners. The system allows authorities to imprison suspects without trial.

China has a policy of only allowing families to have one child and violators suffer from a range of human rights abuses from forced abortions and sterilizations to loss of jobs to imprisonment, harassment and house arrest. One of the leading opponents of the forced abortion campaign, blind attorney Chen Guangcheng, has been sentenced to a four year prison term on trumped up charges to prevent him from exposing the abuses to media outlets. Wolf says Obama has not followed up on his promise to be tough on human rights abusers.
